At Hopewell Works, I contributed to the Lower Mainland's public art landscape as part of the new SkyTrain Millennium Line Evergreen Extension.
The core concept, a laser-etched photo mural on pentagonally tessellated pine blocks, was developed by Dean Cloutier and Jarami Reid. I was tasked with trawling the Coquitlam archives for suitable photographic content, editing and arranging the photos for laser etching, designing an appropriate tile shape and layout, and managing sub-assemblies to keep everyone sane through the construction and installation of 600+ unique wood blocks.
The fact that this artwork would be part of the daily commute for so many people was an exciting and daunting challenge. I worked to find images that might speak to any commuter, and deliver them in honour of a rich cultural history.
